How Can Rhinoplasty Help?

Dr. Marc DuPéré approaches rhinoplasty for his Toronto-area patients with an understanding that successful results come from a combination of technical skill, artistry, and knowledge of the architecture of the face. Dr. DuPéré studied under world-renowned rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Gilbert Aiache in Paris and has extensive experience with the most advanced surgical techniques to improve the size or shape of the nose or correct breathing obstructions.

This procedure can improve the look of the nose by:

  • Refining and elevating the nasal tip
  • Correcting the nose hump
  • Correcting the size and width of nostrils
  • Adjusting the lip-nasal angle
  • Removing excess cartilage
  • Correcting a deviated septum
  • Augmenting the nose with implants or fillers

If you have been unhappy with the appearance of your nose and are interested in learning more about how Dr. DuPéré can help, request a consultation online, or call our office at (416) 929-9800.

Recovering from Rhinoplasty

At Dr. DuPéré’s practice in Toronto, rhinoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure with patients returning home on the same day as surgery. Most people should be able to return to work about a week after surgery, depending on the level of activity at their job. More strenuous activity including exercise should be eased back into slowly over the course of several weeks.

Patients usually leave the surgical center with a splint or other materials applied to the nose to help it maintain its shape in the first few days after surgery. Dr. DuPéré and his team will provide detailed instructions on how to make the recovery go as smoothly as possible. A patient’s result can be subtle or dramatic depending on the level of work done.

  • Facial swelling is common after the procedure but can be alleviated with cold compresses.

  • Slight swelling may take several months to fade, with final results becoming apparent about a year after the rhinoplasty surgery

Risks and Complications

Every surgery comes with potential risks. Though serious complications are rare, Dr. DuPéré educates all rhinoplasty patients about risks such as: scarring, temporary discomfort, bleeding and bruising around the nose and under the eyes, loss of sensation over the nasal tip, infection, nerve and vessel injury, skin necrosis, contour asymmetry, skin surface irregularity and implant-related issues when a nasal implant is being used.

FAQ’s About Rhinoplasty

  • Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Good candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals who are dissatisfied with the size, shape, or proportions of their nose and seek improvement in their nasal aesthetics. Suitable candidates should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure, and not have any medical conditions that could increase the risks of surgery.

  • Will there be visible scarring after rhinoplasty?

In closed rhinoplasty (for a nasal hump reduction for example), incisions are hidden inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible external scarring. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the columella (narrow bridge between the tow nostrils), which may leave a faint scar, but it typically heals well and becomes barely noticeable over time. The open approach allows for a more controlled technique, and therefore better and more predictable results, in rhinoplasty surgery.

  • Is rhinoplasty a painful procedure?

Rhinoplasty is performed under anesthesia, ensuring that patients remain comfortable and pain-free during the procedure. After the surgery, patients may experience some mild discomfort, swelling, and mild bruising, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication.

  • How long is the recovery period after rhinoplasty?

The initial recovery period after rhinoplasty usually takes around one to two weeks. Patients may experience swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes, which gradually improves over the following weeks. Strenuous activities and contact sports should be avoided for several weeks to promote proper healing.

  • Can rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, rhinoplasty can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as chin augmentation, facelift, chin augmentation or chin reduction or eyelid surgery. Dr. DuPéré will assess your unique facial features and goals to create a personalized treatment plan that may include a combination of procedures to achieve the best overall results.
