BELKYRA is meant for patients who exhibit persistent fat under the chin. Fat develops in this area in all kinds of people, often regardless of their dietary and exercise habits. Genetics plays a role, and the condition can also become more pronounced with aging and weight changes.
BELKYRA is ideal for patients who:
BELKYRA is unique in its ability to destroy stubborn fat cells. Its active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, which your body produces naturally in your digestive system for breaking down dietary fat. When used as an injectable, deoxycholic acid dissolves fat cell membranes under the chin. This damage to the cells signals your body to naturally remove them over time.
Once you’ve had a chance to discuss your goals with Dr. DuPéré, each BELKYRA session begins by cleansing your neck and applying a local anesthetic. From there, Dr. DuPéré marks your skin at the locations that will most effectively target fat.
Each treatment session requires several injections spaced in a grid about a centimeter apart over the surface of the area you want to treat. Each injection takes just a brief moment, and your entire appointment should take well under an hour.

When considering your procedure options, it’s important to understand the limitations of BELKYRA in the context of your overall goals. BELKYRA is a good choice for patients with elastic skin who are looking to eliminate a small to moderate amount of double chin fat. There is no surgery and no downtime — but that also means the results aren’t as extensive as a surgical procedure such as liposuction, which may be a better option for some patients.
For those looking to remedy loose, sagging neck skin, a neck lift may be a better choice. When the skin is less elastic, it may need to be lifted. And if your goals involve other areas of the face, as well, a facelift, with or without a small chin implant or fat grafting may be more appropriate. Of course, Dr. DuPéré can go over all your options in more detail during your consultation, and the best solution for you may involve combining procedures.
Recovery from a typical BELKYRA treatment session is very minimal. There’s no downtime, and patients are free to go about their day as normal. Some patients do experience soreness, redness, or swelling immediately following a treatment, but any initial discomfort will be mild and last only a few days.
The final results of each session will be visible about a month later, with fat gradually diminishing as the body naturally removes the fat cells. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

As with all procedures, BELKYRA injections do involve potential risks. In addition to the soreness, redness, and swelling experienced by some patients, other (much rarer) complications can include numbness, itching, a tingling or burning sensation, skin tightness, nerve injury (extremely rare), headaches, nausea, difficulty swallowing, and anesthesia-related issues. Dr. DuPéré educates all patients about possible risks before performing any injections.
Yes. Dr. DuPéré will spend about 30 minutes with you in a typical treatment session. Most of Dr. DuPéré’s patients decide on a treatment plan of 2 to 4 sessions (each about a month apart), but up to 6 sessions are possible.
Cost for treatment varies from patient to patient at our Toronto practice. It’s mostly dependent on 2 factors: the number of injections per session and the total number of sessions. During your consultation, Dr. DuPéré will lay out his recommendation, and we’re happy to provide a detailed quote at that point. We can also discuss financing options during your first visit.
