How Can Abdominal & Muscle Etching Help?

Dr. DuPéré has refined his technique since he started performing muscle etching back in 2004. This procedure emphasizes muscles in areas such as the abdomen by:

  • Selectively removing a small amount of fat from around the patient’s natural musculature
  • Sculpting the abdomen to create a more athletic contour
  • Highlighting other muscle groups such as the thighs, calves, deltoids, pectorals or bicep

Sculpt your way to a more athletic appearance with an abdominal etching procedure performed by a Royal College-certified plastic surgeon. Request a consultation with Dr. Marc DuPéré or call our office at (416) 929-9800.

Dr. DuPéré’s Abdominal & Muscle Etching Techniques

Prior to the procedure, Dr. DuPéré makes detailed markings around the patient’s flexed muscles such as the abdominals, pectorals or deltoids. He then uses these markings as guidelines for removing fat selectively and improving muscle definition.

Abdominal and muscle etching is suitable for patients who are already in shape and who have between 1 and 2 centimeters of “pinchable belly fat.” Because the amount of fat removed is fairly small, this procedure is not suitable for patients with larger accumulations of abdominal fat seeking significant weight reduction. A traditional liposuction procedure is more suitable for these patients.

Who is a Candidate for Abdominal & Muscle Etching?

Abdominal and muscle etching, offered at the Maison VISAGE, is a cutting-edge body contouring procedure designed to sculpt and define the abdominal muscles, creating the appearance of a toned and chiseled physique. Ideal candidates for this procedure are individuals who desire enhanced muscular definition but struggle to achieve their desired results through diet and exercise alone.  Not only “abs” can be sculpted, other muscle groups are also amenable to this techniques such as biceps, triceps, deltoids, quadraceps, etc.

Suitable Candidates:

  • Good General Health: Candidates for abdominal and muscle etching should be in good overall health and have no underlying medical conditions that may interfere with the surgical process or healing.
  • Near Ideal Body Weight: It is essential for candidates to be close to their ideal body weight before considering this procedure. Abdominal and muscle etching is not a weight loss solution, but rather a refinement technique to enhance muscle definition.
  • No excessive amount of loose skin: any loose skin can be made worse with etching and liposuction.  If you do have excess skin, a skin excision might be recommended.
  • Stubborn Fat Deposits: Candidates should have stubborn fat deposits in the abdominal area that are resistant to diet and exercise. This procedure is particularly effective for individuals with a moderate amount of excess fat covering their abdominal muscles.
  • Desire for Enhanced Muscle Definition: Candidates should have a desire to achieve a more defined and sculpted appearance of the abdominal muscles, commonly referred to as “six-pack abs”, “8-pack abs” or “washboard abs.”
  • Realistic Expectations: It is crucial for candidates to have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. While abdominal and muscle etching can significantly enhance muscle definition, individual results may vary based on factors such as muscle structure and skin elasticity.
  • Commitment to a Healthy Lifestyle: To maintain the results of abdominal and muscle etching, candidates should be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet.

Abdominal & Muscle Etching FAQ

  • Can abdominal and muscle etching create the appearance of a six-pack, eight-pack or more defined muscles?

Yes, abdominal and muscle etching can create the appearance of a more defined and sculpted abdomen, including the look of a six- or eight-pack. By selectively, meticulously and artistically removing fat over the individual muscles but also around them at their perimeter, the natural muscle definition is enhanced, resulting in a more chiseled and athletic appearance.

The “abs” are by far the most sculpted when requesting etching at VISAGE, yet, Dr DuPéré etches biceps, triceps, deltoids, external obliques, calves, hamstrings and quadriceps.

  • Can WOMEN also get etching?

ABSOLUTELY.  Many ladies request etching too.  Most ladies are looking for a suave and sexy look and Dr DuPéré will usually etch the vertical lines only, which will also give the impression of a longer torso.  That being said, some ladies want a strong muscular and athletic look and will request the horizontal lines as well.

  • What is the recovery process like after abdominal and muscle etching?

The recovery period after abdominal and muscle etching varies from person to person. Patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the treated areas, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. It is essential to follow the surgeon’s post-operative care instructions and avoid strenuous activities during the initial healing phase.

  • Are the results of abdominal and muscle etching permanent?

The results of abdominal and muscle etching are considered permanent, as the fat cells removed during the procedure do not regenerate. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, is essential to preserving the sculpted appearance over time.

  • Can abdominal and muscle etching be combined with other procedures?

Yes, abdominal and muscle etching can be combined with other body contouring procedures, such as liposuction of other areas or muscle enhancement procedures like calf or pectoral implants. Ladies will often combine etching with breast augmentation and/or labiaplasty. Dr. DuPéré will assess your unique needs and goals to create a personalized treatment plan that may include a combination of procedures to achieve the best overall results.

  • Are there any risks or complications associated with abdominal and muscle etching?

Abdominal and muscle etching is generally safe when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. DuPéré. However, like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, including bruising, seroma, infection, uneven results, skin laxity, and changes in skin sensation that is usually temporary, Dr. DuPéré will discuss these risks with you during the consultation and take every precaution to ensure a safe and successful outcome.

  • How can I get started with abdominal and muscle etching?

To explore abdominal and muscle etching and determine if you are a suitable candidate, schedule a consultation with Dr. Marc DuPéré. During this appointment, you will discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations, allowing Dr. DuPéré to recommend a personalized treatment plan to achieve a more defined and sculpted abdomen – or other anatomical region – that enhances your natural physique and boosts your self-confidence.

Risks and Complications

Every surgery comes with potential risks. Though serious complications are rare, Dr. DuPéré warns all abdominal & muscle etching patients of some of the risks such as: scarring, incomplete or loss of the etched indentations, opening of the wound, temporary discomfort, bleeding and bruising around the surgical sites, loss of sensation over the surgical site and around the scar, fluid accumulation (seroma and hematomas), infection (extremely rare), nerve and vessel injury (a risk with any surgery) and skin necrosis (possibly treatable with wound care).
