Neck Lift

A neck lift can produce a more defined jawline and eliminate the "turkey wattle" that can detract from an otherwise youthful face.

Creating a Sleeker, More Refined Profile

One of the most common anti-aging concerns among patients at our Toronto practice is loose, wrinkled skin on the neck. Dr. Marc DuPéré is a Royal College-certified plastic surgeon specializing in facial rejuvenation who uses advanced techniques to improve the neck’s contours in a natural-looking way.

Who Is a Good Neck Lift Candidate?

The neck is where the first signs of aging often appear. You can benefit from a neck lift if you’re concerned about excess, sagging skin or fat accumulated below the chin, or the hanging vertical neck bands. Dr. DuPéré often combines a neck lift with facelift surgery at his Toronto clinic when requested, but many of his patients’ concerns are limited to the neck area alone, especially when the mid-face is youthfully maintained with BOTOX® and fillers.

Men and women who want a neck lift typically want to address one or more of these conditions:

  • Loose, slack skin often referred to as a turkey wattle
  • Jowls caused by gravity pulling down fat and skin
  • Fat under the chin causing the appearance of a double chin

A person whose skin retains some of its elasticity, who has realistic expectations about the results, and who is in good overall health is considered an ideal neck lift candidate. Alternatively, patients whose aesthetic goals are limited to double chin fat may want to consider BELKYRA™, a non-surgical injection treatment that targets those fat cells with no downtime or incisions.

Complementary Procedures

Dr. DuPéré’s comprehensive approach to improving your appearance includes a range of both nonsurgical and surgical procedures. The increased effectiveness of nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatments, including cosmetic injectables, [link pid=”127″]laser skin resurfacing[/link], and others, enables Dr. DuPéré to create excellent results without performing facial plastic surgery in some cases.

He also often combines procedures to enhance the results of a facelift. These are some of the most common pairings:

  • Neck Lift
  • Fat Grafting
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® injections
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing
  • Chin implant

Patients are often surprised to learn that a facelift alone won’t improve the appearance of the neck. Combining the 2 procedures leads to more harmonious results, as it rejuvenates the lower face and neck simultaneously.

Your own fat is an excellent soft tissue filler. In a fat grafting procedure, Dr. DuPéré transfers fat from an area of the body where it’s unwanted, adding volume to smooth out wrinkles and deep lines in the face.

Dr. DuPéré uses these treatments to soften less pronounced forehead wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes, between the eyebrows, and over the chin, which a facelift or neck lift won’t address.

Combining nonsurgical laser treatments with a facelift or neck lift can also produce an overall improvement for your appearance. Laser skin resurfacing is a highly precise treatment that can reverse sun damage or minimize wrinkles and lines in areas not addressed by aesthetic surgery. Laser resurfacing can be done over the entire face or over isolated areas such as the smoker’s perioral lines, the lower eyelids, or the very fine mid-cheek lines — the so-called “crepey lines.”

In patients with a receding chin, a chin implant can enhance definition in the jawline and create a stronger profile, further accenting the improvements provided by the neck lift.

Recovering After a Neck Lift

Neck lift patients usually go home on the day of the procedure. In some cases, we can arrange an overnight stay at our surgical center. Dr. DuPéré bandages your neck to minimize swelling and bruising and inserts a thin tube that helps drain excess fluid to prevent it from accumulating under the skin; it is often removed on the following day.

Dr. DuPéré provides detailed postoperative instructions that help enhance the healing process and limit your discomfort.

  • Depending on the extent of your procedure, you will probably need to take at least a week or 2 off work or other activities.

  • The recovery will last longer if a facelift or brow lift is combined with the neck lift.

Risks and Complications

All surgery involves potential risks. Dr. DuPéré educates all neck lift patients about risks such as: scarring, opening of the wound, temporary discomfort, bleeding, swelling and bruising around the surgical sites, loss of sensation over the surgical site and around the scar and earlobes, fluid accumulation (seroma and hematomas), infection (extremely rare), nerve and vessel injury, skin necrosis (more common with smokers and possibly treatable with wound care), and general anesthesia-related issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Sets A Neck Lift Apart From A Platysmaplasty?

Although a platysmaplasty and a neck lift procedure have certain similarities, it’s crucial to remember that there are also significant variances between the two procedures.

With a neck lift, one can address the neck and throat aging symptoms listed below:

    • Excess fat under the chin and around the jowls,
    • Skin laxity,
    • Muscle slackness,
    • Submuscular laxity,
    • Among other conditions.

Platysmaplasty, in contrast, entails the restoration of the neck muscles. It enables one to deal with a number of issues, such as:

    • An extra or double chin,
    • Fatty cheeks
    • Skin that is too loose or drooping,
    • Distracting cords or neckbands,
    • Regular aging signs on the skin.

Dr. DuPéré, a facial and body plastic surgeon, always ensures to educate his patients on the different types of procedures that are intended to enhance the appearance of the skin on the neck and face. That said, he is able to describe the variations between a neck lift and a platysmaplasty during your consultation and then assist you in choosing the best course of action based on what kind of results that you are looking for.

  • How Much Time Does It Take To Carry Out The Procedure For A Neck Lift?

The length of time required to finish a neck lift procedure might range anywhere from one to three hours. The duration of the procedure is directly proportional to the degree of difficulty of the technique and the results intended.

  • Will The Neck Lift Incisions Leave Scars?

Incisions will need to be made in order to complete the neck lift surgery. On the other hand, Dr. DuPéré takes precautions to reduce the likelihood of scarring following the procedure.

In most cases, Dr. DuPéré will make an incision along the hairline, just above where the sideburns are located. The incision is made all the way down to the ear, around it, and then continues around the back of the head until it reaches the area just below the hairline.

Incisions for neck lifts are typically quite discrete, which helps to reduce the visibility of scarring after surgery. In the weeks that follow treatment, you might also try using a scar cream in order to further minimize the look of any scarring that may have occurred.

Scars are a possibility following neck lift surgery, although they often fade away over time and are invisible. It can be difficult to detect scars in areas of the skin or hair where there are naturally occurring creases. Before the patient has fully recovered from the neck lift, scars might be concealed using makeup.

  • Why Do Patients Decide To Have Neck Lift Surgery Performed By Dr. DuPéré?

Dr. DuPéré does not believe in taking any short cuts, and he makes it his business to ensure that a neck lift operation assists his patients in achieving the outcomes they desire. Only in cases when he believes the patient could benefit from the treatment does he suggest a neck lift. In addition to this, he customizes a neck lift for each individual patient and makes certain that the procedure can refresh and rejuvenate the look of the face.

  • Are there non-surgical alternatives to a neck lift?

Yes, our medical spa offers an array of such treatments that can improve the appearance of your neck. The best way to determine if your cosmetic goals can be met without surgery is to consult with Dr. DuPéré. BOTOX or Dysport can help soften deep lines in the neck, and intense pulsed light devices can tighten loose skin.

  • When do the results appear after a neck lift?

One of the primary benefits of undergoing facial plastic surgery is that you can enjoy the results after a brief recovery process. Once the swelling and bruising resolve in a few weeks, you’ll see the contoured neck line that you wanted.

  • Am I too young for a neck lift?

Age really isn’t a determining factor when Dr. DuPéré considers treatment alternatives for patients. A neck lift may be appropriate for a patient in his or her early 30s if a less invasive procedure won’t get the results they want. A typical neck lift patient is between ages 40 and 60, yet liposuction alone to the neck is commonly done in patients in their 20s and 30s.

  • Are the results permanent?

Dr. DuPéré always reminds patients that cosmetic surgery doesn’t stop the aging process, but it can turn back the clock. A neck lift results in more youthful contours that should last for years if you lead a healthy lifestyle and don’t smoke.
