Case Details
Transgender is a broad term for persons whose gender identity, gender expression, or behavior is not typical to the sex to which they were born. Gender identity refers to the individual’s internal sense of being male or female. Gender expression refers to the way a person expresses their gender identity with behavior, personal style, voice, or body shape. The ways that transgender people are viewed and accepted are constantly changing, particularly as our (the general population) awareness, knowledge, and openness about transgender people and our experiences continue to grow. Transgender re-assignment surgery is a specialty of Dr. DuPere.
This 18 year old was referred to Dr. DuPere as trans-male client. When referred to Dr. DuPere he had been living as a male for over 1 year, was in counselling and was being followed by an endocrinologist for hormone therapy. He was interested beginning re-assignment surgery with gynecomastia or chest wall contouring. His parents were fully supportive and involved, attending the consultation and appointments with Dr. DuPere both before and after surgery
The surgery was done under a general anesthetic. Dr. DuPere used the peri-areolar approach which results in the least amount of scarring and the most natural result.
The female breast tissue was excised and a smaller male sized areolae was designed and re-positioned. The final result is a young males chest with minimal to no scarring. Our patient was very pleased.
