Most people are familiar with chin and cheek implants but facial implants, such as jaw implants, can augment many other areas as well. At my Toronto practice, I use implants to enhance the temple (for hollowed aging temples), nose (to augment the dorsum), midface and perinasal (common in Asians to augment their recessed midface), tear trough (to replace the loss of fat with aging in the tear trough area), along with various custom-made implants.
Increasing the angles of the jaw is a very powerful way to transform one’s face from a round to a square, lower face. And this is even more powerful when adding the cheeks’ buccal fat pad removal as seen in the next picture below.
Men who desire to increase their “alpha male” factor express significant interest in jaw implants. Most male models have strong angles.
It’s common to use fillers such as JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA to create a stronger jawline. VOLUMA is thicker and lasts longer than other fillers and gets quite remarkable, long-lasting, but temporary, results when used to augment the jawline. Many patients prefer this route as there is no downtime and it gets immediate results. Additionally, patients can take have a say in the extent of the augmentation.
Other patients desire permanent results and consider surgery.
Jaw angle implants are made of silicone, a solid but soft and pliable material. They are in the shape of a wide hockey stick (Canadian reference!) and will sit over the inferior and posterior border of the jaw angle. I insert the implant via a small, 2 cm intraoral incision at the back of the molar teeth. That means there’s no visible scar. The implants hug the original angles and sit under the masseter muscle, which covers most of the implant. I like to hold the implant in place with a tiny, 6 mm screw because of the strength of the masseter muscle and to limit the chance of implant displacement (unlikely, but possible) during the initial healing period.

We have a few models of jaw angle implants in North America (USA and Canada).
We have an implant to widen the jaw angle (therefore the inter-gonal or inter-angle distance); this is the traditional option when considering a jaw angle augmentation.
We also have the model that can BOTH increase the inter-angle width AND augment the vertical height of the posterior jaw. The latter one can add several millimeters of inferior projection of the jawline, squaring the face very effectively—both in profile and front view. Patients with rounder faces commonly request this when trying to get a more assertive, masculine look.

Recovery after jaw angle implant augmentation involves some muscle tenderness, swelling, and possible bruising in the jaw angle area.
Males request jaw angle augmentation much more often than women, but there is a small group of ladies who want the Angelina Jolie strong jawline and jaw angle implants would do just that for them.
