Lip Lift & Augmentation

Toronto-area patients who desire sensuous, full lips visit Dr. Marc DuPéré to inquire about getting lip augmentation or a surgical lip lift to enhance their appearance. Some patients have naturally thin lips or lips with downturned corners, and others see these signs develop as they age. Dr. DuPéré may use dermal fillers or fat grafting to rejuvenate the lips and area around the mouth, or he may recommend lip lift surgery.

Few plastic surgeons in the Toronto area offer the lip lift technique Dr. DuPéré uses. Request a consultation with him using our online form, or call our clinic at (416) 929-9800 to schedule an appointment.

How Can a Lip Lift Help?

Some patients have had naturally thin lips all their lives simply because of their genetic makeup, and they are interested in enhancing their lips to balance their facial proportions.

For others, the area between the upper lip and the nose tends to expand, thin out and sag as we age. This elongation of this area — called the white lip — affects your overall appearance. Additionally, many people lose volume in the lips as they age. The combined changes can lead the lower face to look prematurely aged and will also hide your teeth when smiling. Remember that showing some white teeth with smiling is a very attractive feature.

Dermal fillers provide a temporary solution by adding volume to the upper lip and reducing the nasolabial folds that stretch from the nose to the corners of the mouth. This is an appropriate treatment path for some patients, but lip lift surgery offers a more permanent solution. A surgical approach is an especially good choice if the patient is concerned that his or her teeth barely show when smiling.

Dr. DuPéré's Lip Lift Techniques

Dr. DuPéré is an experienced plastic surgeon who customizes his techniques to meet the specific needs of each patient. He determines which technique to use for your lip lift after he listens to your cosmetic concerns and closely examines the existing shape of your lips.

Dr. DuPéré commonly uses 5 techniques:

  • Lifting the corners of the upper lip, aka corner lip lift, results in a wider-looking mouth, which looks more youthful. He makes incisions along the upper right and left lip lines, resulting in very discreet scars that are barely visible.
  • Lifting the central two-thirds of the upper lip, aka Bullhorn lip lift, results in a fuller-looking lip and reduces the area between the upper lip and the nose. The procedure is technically demanding and requires the skill and experience of a plastic surgeon such as Dr. DuPéré.
  • A suspension of the upper lip muscle to the nasal septum using an incision just under the nose is often combined with one of the techniques described above. It is an efficient way to lift the lip and give more teeth show.
  • The Gullwing lip lift and the Italian lip lift are 2 other techniques Dr. DuPéré may suggest depending on your anatomy, your age and your expected result.

If you have other aesthetic concerns, as well, Dr. DuPéré may be able to combine your lip lift with another facial surgery such as a facelift. Combining surgeries is a safe and effective way to get comprehensive results.

Recovering From Lip Lift Surgery

A lip lift is an outpatient procedure, meaning you return home on the day of surgery. Temporary bruising and swelling is normal and typically resolves within a week of the procedure. There is little downtime, and postoperative discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter or prescription pain relief medication.

Recovery following a lip lift also varies depending on the technique used. Dr. DuPéré provides patients with detailed post-op instructions that help make recovery as quick and simple as possible.

Risks and Complications

Every surgery comes with potential risks. Though serious complications are rare, Dr. DuPéré educates all facial contouring patients about risks such as: scarring, opening of the wound, temporary discomfort, bleeding and bruising around the surgical sites, loss of sensation over the surgical site and around the scar, infection (extremely rare) and nerve and vessel injury (a risk with any surgery).
