Facial Implants

Using implants to sculpt attractive facial contours that create balance and harmony between the features of your face is a specialized technique Dr. Marc DuPéré has honed throughout his career. Profiloplasty, Dr. DuPéré’s innovative approach to assessing a patient’s facial structure, involves viewing the face from multiple angles to envision how implants can help create your optimal appearance.

Patients who get facial implants at our Toronto-area practice see immediate, long-lasting results.

Implant Options

Implants can be used to augment or contour virtually any area of the face, from the forehead to the chin. Dr. DuPéré has multiple choices available to accommodate each patient’s unique needs. In some cases, he can have a customized implant made. All facial implants are made of silicone that’s solid, but very soft. Some others are made of e-PTFE (Gore-Tex, Teflon). Implants can be either smooth or textured. In addition to using implants for facial contouring, Dr. DuPéré uses implants for body contouring (pectoral, biceps, triceps, buttocks, hips, thighs, calf) and breast augmentation.

Facial implants offered at Visage include:

Facial Implant Option: Temple shell

Temple (temporal) shell

Aging, terminal diseases, and some immunodeficiency conditions can cause temples to appear hollow. Injectable fillers can temporarily restore volume, but another option is to insert temporal implants. This is a relatively simple procedure Dr. DuPéré performs to minimize the "peanut head" appearance created by the loss of volume in the temples. Dr. DuPéré inserts them through an incision made in the scalp that's hidden in the hair. The implants are then secured deep under the temporal tissue layers. Several models and sizes exist, and Dr. DuPéré can carve and modify the solid implants for a custom fit.

Facial Implant Option: Cheek

Even with the development of hyaluronic acid fillers designed specifically to restore volume to the cheeks, cheek implants remain a popular choice for men and women seeking a permanent solution to their facial feature concerns. Dr. DuPéré inserts cheeks implants through incisions he makes in the upper gums. He then positions the implants and attaches them to the bones in the cheek area using a very small screw to prevent them from moving. The sutures inside the mouth dissolve naturally.

Facial Implant Option: Tear trough

Tear trough (lower lid)

Dr. DuPéré often inserts tiny implants into the tear troughs during a lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to help counter the effects of age-related volume loss. He may use the implants alone or combine them with fat grafting or repositioning/redraping fat, procedures normally coupled with a lower lid lift. Dermal fillers are also an option for restoring volume to the tear troughs.

Facial Implant Option: Nose

Nose (nasal)

Nasal implants usually augment the dorsum (bridge) and tend to be curvilinear. Some have a 90-degree angle for tip support. Dr. DuPéré uses nasal implants only if there are no good "donor" sites, such as cartilage from the septum or ear cartilage, to create the desired results. He typically inserts implants using a "closed" approach so that incisions aren't visible. These implants are used as part of rhinoplasty surgeries, which is typically performed with the patient under general anesthesia. If a dorsal nasal implant is inserted as a stand-alone procedure, Dr. DuPéré can do that using a local anesthetic with IV sedation.

Facial Implant Option: Mid-face piriform

Mid-face piriform (nasolabial)

As with other areas of the face, implants can be used as an alternative to traditional, temporary fillers for mid-face contouring. When a patient’ mid-face profile is underprojected, the face has the shape of a dish. People who want to augment the area around the nostrils and upper gums (the peri-alar area), are good candidates for this type of implant. Dr. DuPéré often uses the mid-face implant for Asian and African-American patients who want to add mid-face projection. The implant adds anterior projection to the premaxilla and provides a platform for the nasal base. If done as a sole procedure, recovery is relatively fast with possible, yet barely noticeable, swelling for 1-2 weeks.

Facial Implant Option: Chin

Chin implants are among the most commonly requested by patients at our Toronto-area practice. Both men and women concerned about a receding chin (often called a "weak" chin) can benefit from chin implants inserted by Dr. DuPéré. Thirteen models or so exist and some are for males, some for females. The surgeon may use chin implants for rhinoplasty patients to create a more attractive and balanced profile. Dr. DuPéré commonly uses chin implants in his facelift and neck lift patients to improve results and their longevity and also to replenish the bony mass lost with aging. Chin implants are also very useful in transgender patients for both facial feminization and masculinization procedures. Dr. DuPéré understands that the aesthetic ideal of a male chin is quite different than that for females and tailors his technique to achieve the desired results.

Facial Implant Option: Jaw angle mandibular

Jaw angle mandibular

One of the most powerful ways to transform a round face into one with more definition is by increasing the jaw's angles. This can be done for both men and women. Implants that widen the jaw angle are the most common, but other implants can both widen the jaw and augment the jaw's height. These changes can add to the jaw's projection, creating the square jaw that is associated with a more masculine appearance. Dr. DuPéré inserts the implant through a very small incision at the back of the molar teeth, so there's no visible scar. To minimize the chance the implant can be displaced by the masseter muscle, he uses tiny screws to hold the implant in place. Dr. DuPéré’s blog post gives you additional information.

Facial Implant Option: Forehead

This is a prosthetic surgery that places a silicone forehead implant under the skin to augment the area when a depression or unevenness creates an undesirable appearance. The implant creates a stable, long-lasting augmentation. Dr. DuPéré makes an incision at the scalp behind the hairline and attaches the implant to the bone. This procedure not only reinforces the forehead arc and curvature, but also provides a mild lift for sagging forehead skin.

Facial Implant Option: Skull

Aesthetic skull reshaping is becoming more popular. Most people think of skull surgery as intracranial surgery (inside the skull), but plastic surgery of the skull is an extracranial procedure that Dr. DuPéré performs to contour, augment, and reshape aesthetic concerns from the brow bones to the back of the head, as well as around the sides. Bone shaving and sculpting and/or implants inserted just below the scalp can create contours for patients who have flat or uneven skull shapes.

Custom-made Implants

With the increasing popularity of facial implants, more designs are available than ever before. But not all off-the-shelf implants are right for every situation, and injectable fillers provide only temporary solutions. Dr. DuPéré carves custom implants using square or rectangular silicone carving blocks. Custom implants can reshape the face when pre-shaped implants don’t address a patient’s aesthetic concerns. Advanced 3D computer imaging technology makes it possible for Dr. DuPéré to design an implant to precisely address a specific area of the face. The computer-driven custom design and manufacturing process can produce just about any facial implant that a surgeon wants.
