Dramatic Improvements For A More Youthful Appearance

Dr. DuPéré understands that producing consistently excellent requires finesse and a comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation.

Ageing skin and gravity lead to inevitable sagging and wrinkles. You may turn to injectable, “ liquid facelifts . However, when non-surgical fillers and wrinkle treatments reach their limit, facelifts can deliver dramatic improvements. Removing excess skin and repositioning underlying tissue, restores long-lasting tone and smooth features.

If you want to restore a more youthful appearance to your face with a lift that still looks natural, request a consultation to meet in Toronto with Dr. DuPéré, a Royal College-certified plastic surgeon. Or call our office at (416) 929-9800.

Who Is a Good Facelift Candidate?

Patients who consult with Dr. DuPéré often ask whether they need a facelift or if their concerns can be addressed through non-surgical treatments. In many cases, he recommends a comprehensive approach combining cosmetic surgery with wrinkle-reducing injections and fat grafting.

Men and women typically can benefit from facelift surgery if they have:

  • Loose, sagging skin
  • Sagging jowls and cheeks
  • Deep nasolabial folds (laugh lines)
  • Diminished muscle tone
  • Downward or frowning mouth corners

Even though some patients express concerns only about a certain area of the face — for example, they don’t like the way their furrowed eyebrows make them appear tired all the time — facial aging typically affects all areas of the face simultaneously. So a good candidate for a facelift likely will benefit from having a neck lift and often a brow lift, too. During your consultation, Dr. DuPéré specifically explains the treatment plan that he believes will produce the optimal results based on your specific needs.

Jowls, sagging neck, and cheeks that have lost their lustre can all be transformed through a facelift at our Toronto clinic.

A Facial Plastic Surgery Specialist

Facial cosmetic surgery is unique because the results are always visible. That is why it’s important to choose a surgeon such as Dr. DuPéré whose skill and commitment to personalizing results are virtually unmatched. In Paris, France, he trained with Dr. Daniel Marchac, one of the world’s foremost authorities on facial plastic surgery. He later continued to refine his facial rejuvenation techniques while working with Dr. Bruce Connell, a prominent facial plastic surgeon in Los Angeles, California, and Dr. Patricia Wexler, a New York City dermatologist whose expertise in dermal injections, skin care, and fat grafting is recognized internationally.

Dr. DuPéré’s extensive training and experience performing facial plastic surgery are combined with an artist’s eye, allowing him to achieve the balance and symmetry that are critical components of an attractive, youthful face.

Recovering After a Facelift

You can plan to return home the day of your procedure, although Dr. DuPéré’s practice can arrange a supervised night with one of our nurses at your home or at our surgical center.

Dr. DuPéré places small drains at the incision sites to help the healing process; he removes them 1 to 2 days after the operation. You should wear a special compression garment for 1 week at all times and then only at night as long as necessary. Dr. DuPéré also recommends lymphatic drainage (a specialized massage) at our med spa to help your recovery following a facelift.

  • Swelling and bruising vary significantly depending on the techniques Dr. DuPéré uses.

  • These side effects can last as little as 5 to 7 days or up to 2 to 3 weeks.

  • It is usually OK to begin applying makeup several days after the procedure.

Risks and Complications

Every surgery comes with potential risks. Though serious complications are rare, Dr. DuPéré educates all facelift patients about risks such as: scarring, opening of the wound, temporary discomfort, bleeding, swelling and bruising around the surgical sites, loss of sensation over the surgical site and around the scar and earlobes, fluid accumulation (seroma and hematomas), infection (extremely rare), nerve and vessel injury, skin necrosis (more common with smokers and possibly treatable with wound care), and general anesthesia-related issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • At What Age Should One Consider Getting A Facelift?

Patients who were born with excess skin or fat may begin to contemplate cosmetic facelift surgery at a younger age. This is because the procedure can produce long-lasting results. In younger patients, liposuction of the neck and augmentation of the chin with an implant are procedures that are performed more frequently. After the age of forty, many patients begin to think about undergoing cosmetic facelift surgery to reduce the appearance of skin aging.

  • When Should I Expect The Edema From My Facelift To Go Away?

Depending on a number of factors, the acute swelling that follows facelift surgery could linger for up to two weeks or as little as a week. After this initial time after recuperation, swelling will still be present; however, the patient is typically the only one who will notice it. The very last small bit of swelling eventually disappears over the course of several months.

It is possible to have swelling in areas of the face and eyes close to the operation site even though plastic surgery was not necessarily performed in such areas. This can happen even if the surgery was performed in the area directly adjacent to the surgery site. Gravity and the normal circulation of fluid in the tissues are to blame for the progression of the facial swelling in this area. In addition, bear in mind that the eyelids, face, and nose are highly vulnerable to swelling that can be caused by other factors, such as allergies, nutrition, hormones, gravity, sleep, and so on.

  • How Can I Lessen The Likelihood Of Complications During My Facelift?

The most effective strategy for lowering risk is education. It is helpful to increase safety by gaining knowledge about the surgery and the hazards involved, including having a conversation with your cosmetic surgeon Dr. DuPéré.

Care should be taken to adhere to both the preoperative and postoperative guidelines provided by your plastic surgeon. These instructions on how to care for the surgical site are only meant to serve as a guide and do not replace any specific instructions given to you. Both before the procedure and during your recovery after cosmetic surgery, being prepared will lessen the risks you face.

  • After Having A Facelift, What Can I Do To Diminish Or Minimize The Appearance Of The Scars?

In the beginning, the skin and tissue close to the incisions may look puffed up and pink. This puffiness will become less noticeable over time. When applied topically to exterior wounds, petroleum jelly, such as products like Vaseline and Aquaphor, helps the skin look its best and decreases the appearance of scars. During the first phase of the healing process, ensure that the incisions are kept moist with petrolatum ointment at all times. Before receiving further instruction, you should refrain from using any additional hair products, including lotions and creams. In addition, during the early stages of the recuperation process, you should be especially careful while combing, brushing, or styling your hair in any way.

In addition to avoiding smoking, it is important to consume a good diet, get plenty of sleep, be well hydrated, and maintain healthy sleeping and eating habits. Also, always use sunscreen.

  • How long do the results last?

This is something every patient understandably wants to know. There isn’t a simple answer because the duration of the results is related to the techniques Dr. DuPéré uses for each patient. The most extensive procedures will produce results that last longer. No matter what type of facelift you choose, you can expect the results to last several years, especially if you exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is important to remember that the aging process continues after having a facelift, and you may need non-surgical touch-up treatments periodically to maintain your results. Practicing good skin care habits, such as always wearing sunscreen, can also help prolong your results.

  • Is combining procedures safe?

Performing more than 1 procedure during a single operation is safe and can be much more satisfying for the patient. Instead of taking a piecemeal approach to facial rejuvenation, Dr. DuPéré visualizes the overall appearance. It is quite common to combine a facelift, which addresses signs of aging in the lower face, with a  brow lift, fat grafting, or a chin implant. Doing so creates a more natural look. Injectable fillers and wrinkle-reducing treatments can put the final touches on the results. Patients looking to extend their results to the chin often seek BELKYRA™ injections to remove unwanted chin fat.

What is a Mini Facelift?

A mini facelift is an effective option for some of the Toronto women and men who visit Visage Clinic for facial rejuvenation. This modified facelift technique involves shorter incisions to rejuvenate specific areas of the face with a faster recovery. Dr. Marc DuPéré specializes in facial aesthetic procedures and uses advanced techniques to create long-lasting results that look natural.

Mini Facelift Benefits

Many women and men interested in facial rejuvenation ask about the mini facelift because of its many benefits:

  • Using a local anesthetic and sedation (rather than general anesthesia)
  • Shorter operation
  • Reduced recovery time
  • Shorter incisions

Who Is a Good Mini Facelift Candidate?

It’s natural for patients to want a procedure that is less invasive and requires a shorter recovery, but it’s not right for everyone. Dr. DuPéré’s assessment of your anatomy and your skin’s tone and texture — along with your cosmetic goals — are key factors in determining whether a mini facelift can provide the desired results.

Here are 3 indications that you’re likely a good candidate:

  • You’re in your 40s or 50s with minimal to moderate excess skin.
  • The skin and muscle in your neck remain relatively smooth and tight.
  • Your primary concern is the lack of definition along your jaw.

The techniques involved in performing a mini facelift can produce lasting results, but it’s important that patients understand the procedure’s limitations. When Dr. DuPéré believes a mini facelift will not provide the desired result, he may recommend a more extensive facelift procedure to address significant age-related sagging.

Recovering After a Mini Facelift

A mini facelift is an outpatient procedure, and the recovery is typically shorter and more comfortable than what patients experience following a full facelift. Because the mini facelift consists mostly of minimal manipulation of the underlying tissue and muscle and a shorter incision, there is often little or no bruising.

If Dr. DuPéré places small drains at the incision sites, he removes them within a day or 2 of the operation. Dr. DuPéré provides every patient with detailed recovery instructions that can help enhance the healing process and make the recovery as comfortable as possible. Additionally, his blog post on facelift recovery offers some useful tips.

  • Swelling is a common side effect, but resolves on its own with a few days.

  •  Dr. DuPéré often uses internal stitches — but when he does use external sutures, they can be removed 7 days after the procedure.

Mini Facelift FAQ

  • Which Procedure, The Mini Facelift Or The Standard Facelift, Produces Greater And Better Results?

In most cases, there is a clear difference in which procedure someone will need. Additional surgical intervention will be necessary for patients who have much greater skin laxity and neck fat. When compared to younger patients, older adults typically require additional surgical procedures. Patients who are typically younger and show more moderate signs of face aging are typically suitable candidates for mini facelifts.

Procedures that involve less work sound enticing, but they may not produce the results that are wanted in some individuals. Because of the individual nature of each patient, the selection of the most appropriate facelift technique can only be made after a careful examination by a cosmetic surgeon. A visit with Dr. DuPéré, a facelift surgeon will assist in evaluating which aspects of your appearance are caused by which variables, as well as which operations are most suitable to rejuvenate the face and neck.

  • Is It Possible To Perform The Mini Facelift At The Same Time As The Neck Lift?

The lower cheeks, jowls, and a portion of the upper neck can be tightened with a mini facelift; however, we also provide an extensive neck lift procedure, which will finish the process of revitalizing your appearance. Some people’s skin becomes lax and saggy as a result of the platysma muscle on each side of the neck becoming separated and causing visible wrinkles. In order to treat these issues, Dr. DuPéré performs neck lifts to target those specific skin flaws.

When possible, it is best to combine a mini facelift with a neck lift in order to achieve optimal results in terms of cost savings, the number of incisions required, and the amount of recovery time required.

  • How Long Does A Mini Facelift Take To Complete?

A mini facelift normally takes between one and two hours, but when combined with a significant neck lift, the procedure can take as long as three and a half to four hours.

  • Are There Scars Involved With A Mini Facelift?

When compared to those connected with regular facelifts, the incisions that are required for a mini facelift are significantly less in size, which is one of the major benefits of the mini facelift. When performing a mini facelift, Dr. DuPéré pays careful attention to the incisions he makes, taking the time to carefully situate them around the ears and carefully suturing them so that they are nearly undetectable. The final product is as aesthetically pleasing as it is feasible to make it.

  • Are There Any Non-Surgical Treatments That Can Give Me The Same Effects As A Mini Facelift?

There is no permanent non-surgical alternative that can give the same results as a mini facelift that is currently available on the market. A facelift is still the procedure that is considered to be the gold standard for rejuvenating the midface and lower neck areas of the face.

Non-surgical procedures offer the possibility of seeing little improvements, but for those of you who want to address the more severe indications of aging, a facelift offers the possibility of seeing the most significant effects for a long period of time.

  • Will A Facelift Address Sagging Neck Skin And Jowls?

Yes, a facelift can address sagging neck skin and jowls. During the procedure, the underlying facial tissues are repositioned, and excess skin is removed to restore a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. This includes addressing sagging skin in the neck area and tightening the jawline to reduce the appearance of jowls. Dr. DuPéré will customize the procedure to target your specific concerns and achieve natural-looking results.

  • Can A Facelift Correct Deep Wrinkles And Folds?

Yes, a facelift can help improve the appearance of deep wrinkles and folds on the face. The repositioning and tightening of the facial tissues during a facelift procedure can smooth out wrinkles and creases, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed appearance. However, it is important to have realistic expectations, as a facelift may not completely eliminate all wrinkles or folds. Dr. DuPéré can discuss additional treatments or adjunct procedures that may complement the results of your facelift.

  • Will A Facelift Make Me Look Unnatural Or “Pulled”?

Modern facelift techniques aim to achieve natural-looking results. Skilled plastic surgeons such as Dr. DuPéré uses advanced surgical techniques to lift and reposition the underlying tissues, avoiding an overly tight or pulled appearance. The goal is to restore a youthful contour and enhance your natural features without compromising facial harmony. Choosing a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon is crucial to ensure a balanced and natural outcome.

  • Can A Facelift Improve The Appearance Of Sun-Damaged Skin Or Age Spots?

A facelift primarily focuses on addressing sagging skin, jowls, and facial contours. While it can provide some improvement in skin texture and tone, it is not specifically designed to address sun-damaged skin or age spots. However, Dr. DuPéré may recommend additional treatments or procedures, such as laser resurfacing or chemical peels, to target specific skin concerns and enhance the overall results of your facelift.

  • Are There Non-Surgical Alternatives To A Facelift?

Yes, there are non-surgical alternatives available for facial rejuvenation. These include injectable treatments, such as dermal fillers and neuromodulators, which can temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and add volume to the face. Non-invasive procedures like skin tightening treatments and laser therapies can also improve skin laxity and texture. However, it’s important to note that these non-surgical options may not achieve the same level of improvement as a facelift, particularly for individuals with significant sagging skin or muscle laxity.

  • Can A Facelift Be Combined With Other Facial Rejuvenation Procedures?

Yes, a facelift can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures to address multiple concerns simultaneously. Common complementary procedures include eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), brow lift, and fat transfer. Combining procedures can provide more comprehensive rejuvenation and produce a harmonious overall result. However, the decision to combine procedures will depend on factors such as your overall health, aesthetic goals, and the recommendations of Dr. DuPéré.

  • Will A Facelift Change My Facial Expression Or Alter My Natural Features?

A well-performed facelift should not change your facial expression or alter your natural features. The goal of a facelift is to rejuvenate and enhance your existing features, not to create a completely different appearance. Skilled plastic surgeons strive to achieve natural-looking results that maintain your unique facial characteristics while restoring a more youthful and refreshed look.

  • Can I Undergo A Facelift If I Have Had Previous Facial Surgery?

In some cases, individuals who have had previous facial surgery may still be candidates for a facelift. It depends on the specific procedures performed, the extent of scarring, and the condition of the underlying tissues. During your consultation, Dr. DuPéré will evaluate your previous surgical history and assess whether a facelift is a suitable option for you. They will take into account factors such as scar placement and tissue viability to determine the best approach for achieving your desired results.

  • How Long Do I Need To Wait Before I Can Resume My Normal Exercise Routine After A Facelift?

It is important to avoid strenuous exercise and activities that increase heart rate and blood pressure for several weeks after a facelift. This allows the body to heal and reduces the risk of complications. Dr. DuPéré will provide specific guidelines on when it is safe to resume exercise and what activities should be avoided during the initial recovery period. It is crucial to follow these instructions to ensure optimal healing and minimize the risk of complications.

  • Will A Facelift Eliminate All Signs Of Aging On My Face?

    >While a facelift can provide significant improvements and reverse the signs of aging, it cannot completely halt the natural aging process. Over time, the effects of aging, gravity, and environmental factors may continue to impact the appearance of your face. However, a well-executed facelift can help you look more youthful and refreshed for many years. Additionally, adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a proper skincare regimen and sun protection, can help maintain your results and slow down the aging process.

  • Are The Results Of A Facelift Permanent?

While the results of a facelift are long-lasting, they are not permanent. The aging process will continue, and factors such as genetics, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors can affect the longevity of your results. However, a well-performed facelift can turn back the clock and provide you with a more youthful appearance that can last for many years. To maximize the longevity of your results, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, protect your skin from sun damage, and follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions. Regular maintenance treatments or touch-ups may also be recommended to further enhance and prolong the results.
