Dr. DuPéré's Breast Reduction Technique

Breast reduction takes place under general anesthesia in most cases. The procedure generally takes about 3 hours.

Dr. DuPéré employs a European method called Lejour Vertical Reduction (also known as the lollipop scar technique) in 95 percent of his breast reduction procedures. This technique causes less scarring and discomfort than other methods such as the anchor technique. It also greatly diminishes the chance of decreased nipple sensation and prevents wide inframmary scars.

Dr. DuPéré uses glandular remodeling and fascial suspension techniques to provide vertical support. He also removes excess skin when performing breast reduction surgery. A breast lift is always a positive outcome of a breast reduction procedure.

Each of Dr. DuPéré's breast reduction procedures includes liposuction to remove excess fat. Liposuction eliminates bra and axillary (underarm) rolls. It also enhances the cosmetic outcome of breast reduction by contouring the breast glands and creating a better breast shape. Dr. DuPéré often incorporates breast lift techniques into reduction procedures.

Recovering from Breast Reduction

Breast reduction patients can usually return home the day of their procedure. Patients often feel discomfort for 3 to 5 days after surgery. Some women will require drains for a few days.

Breast reduction patients should initiate walking and stretching on the day of the procedure, avoid exercise for 4 weeks and avoid upper chest exercises for 6 weeks. Most women can return to desk work after 7 to 14 days.

Patients generally wear a compression garment for 2 days, followed by a comfortable sports bra. Breast reduction patients should avoid push-up and underwire bras for 6 to 8 weeks.

Potential Risks and Complications

Every procedure involves inherent risks. Although serious complications are extremely rare, Dr. DuPéré educates every breast lift patient about potential risks.

Those risks can include scarring, opening of the wound, discomfort for several days, bruising around the surgical sites, loss of sensation over the chest skin and, rarely, of the nipples, possible inability to breastfeed, temporary superficial vein inflammation, asymmetry, fluid accumulation (seroma and hematomas), infection, bleeding, nerve and vessel injury, skin necrosis, deep venous thrombosis (clotting), and general anesthesia-related issues.
