Getting the Best Results

Patients who come to Visage seeking the "treatment du jour" are often better served by other procedures. Gabriela prides herself on assessing each patient's unique skin care needs and recommending treatment options that will best address those needs.

"I am straightforward when discussing treatment plans with patients," she says. "I think it's important to educate patients about what certain treatments or modalities can accomplish, as well as what their limitations are. When patients understand that, they are usually very satisfied with their outcomes."

Becoming an Aesthetic Specialist

Gabriela was born in Argentina's wine country and moved to Toronto with her family when she was 12. She grew up about 30 minutes from Visage Clinic's Yorkville location in North York. She's dreamed about working in the beauty industry as long as she can remember. Her dad actually took her for her first facial at a medispa when she was 14.

She began pursuing her dream immediately after graduating from high school, attending an aesthetics academy and then later getting advanced training in the use of laser treatments. Gabriela continues to keep up with the latest advances in medspa skin care treatments by training with manufacturers such as Sciton, Cynosure, Lumenis, and Pollogen.

Gabriela's reputation as one of Toronto's leading skin care and cosmetic laser specialists has led to her being featured in a number of beauty publications. These include Toronto Life's Stylebook, which spotlighted her expertise, saying that Gabriela "takes skin care seriously, customizing facials and prescribing lab-hatched serums," as one of the city's most sought-after estheticians.

In Her Own Words

The range of skin conditions that can be effectively treated with nonsurgical aesthetic procedures has expanded greatly over the past 20 years. Some of the treatments performed personally by Gabriela at VISAGE include:

  • Acne treatment
  • Advanced medical skin care
  • Chemical peels
  • Fat reduction
  • Intense pulsed light
  • Laser hair removal
  • Laser skin resurfacing
  • Laser vein therapy
  • Microneedling
  • Medical grade facials
  • OxyGeneo®
  • Skin tightening
  • Profractional laser treatments

Skin tightening treatments are among Gabriela's personal favorites. Here, she answers questions about which specific procedures she believes get the optimal results and how aesthetic treatments have changed in the past 2 decades:

What aesthetic treatments are you passionate about?

Microneedling has recently become quite popular, but I've been using this treatment for years. I know first-hand of its benefits because I use it on myself. There are several microneedling options available, but I prefer VoluDerm. The technology combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin. These are essential components of tight, hydrated skin. In many cases, I combine VoluDerm with OxyGeneo and PRP, a platelet-super-rich plasma treatment, which nourishes, hydrates, stimulates, restores, and exfoliates the skin.

What are some significant changes you've seen in the past 20 years?

In general, procedures require less downtime, are more versatile, and involve less discomfort. Chemical peels, for example, used to be so invasive that patients would need weeks to recover. Now, even aggressive peels only require about 3 or 4 days of recovery, and lighter peels require no downtime at all.

Hybrid treatments — such as VoluDerm's combination of RF energy and microneedling — didn't exist 20 years ago and have made treating aesthetic patients much more efficient. This versatility is also seen with lasers. One machine or system can treat multiple conditions, and the advanced technology is more effective than ever. Additionally, treatments such as broadband light (BBL) or intense pulsed light (IPL) are much more comfortable than they used to be, when the downtime was fairly significant. Now you can leave after an IPL treatment and only look like you had a facial.
