Botox for Men: "Bro-tox" Gaining Popularity

By Heini Talip

Move over, ladies! It's not only women who are worried about fine lines and wrinkles. More and more botox injections are given to men. Many of these new plastic surgery customers are young men boosting their looks and smoothing out frown lines. "Bro-tox," as it's nicknamed, is becoming popular as a gift for image-conscious men.

Man portraitIf you're having trouble finding a gift for your significant other, take notes. More men are showing up in plastic surgery offices and having Botox done, ABC News reports. In 2011, more than 300,000 men had the wrinkle smoothing shot. That's a 10% increase from 2010. According to Dr. Anthony Youn, a plastic surgeon from Michigan, "We're seeing a lot of men . . . who are having these [Botox treatments] as gifts as early as in their thirties." It's not only older men who are getting Botox anymore; younger ones are waking up to realize that their looks might need some refreshing. Many men are getting their first shots as gifts from wives and girlfriends who want to give the men in their life a confidence boost. Women worry over their wrinkles and fine lines all the time; why not men, too? They might just need a little push to do something about it.

Men getting botox is not a new thing but is definitely a growing trend. Wrinkles can make men look angry and unapproachable. Getting botox is a way to soften their looks and erase years, to succeed at work or with the opposite sex. And it's not just the trendy and stereotypical guys that show up for some primping anymore. "A lot of times they're men you wouldn't necessarily see coming into a plastic surgeon's office," Dr. Youn says. It's the average joes getting some extra pampering and realizing that taking care of yourself isn't just for the ladies.
